Babbling is when repeated syllables are strung together, such as “ma-ma-ma-ma.” Babbled “words” often do not mean anything and are not associated with any one object, but are a way of practicing expressive communication. Babies exposed to sign-language often babble with their hands.
Babies begin babbling around 6 months old. Babies like to babble with their caregivers and will babble at themselves in a mirror. If your baby does not babble, consider discussing your concerns with your pediatrician or our Speech-Language Pathologists!
